LONDON — Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday that Britain “should not leap to knee-jerk conclusions” about the need for tougher gun laws in the wake of the shooting rampage in northwestern England on Wednesday that left 13 people dead, including the gunman. Hungerford and Dunblane brought about stringent measures on gun control which appear to have achieved little more than to penalise owners of legally-held rifles and guns.
The most glaring anomaly is that after Dunblane the possession of handguns was prohibited in this country at great expense to the public purse, and yet there are now many more illegally-held handguns in the land than ever there were before.
This largely says it all.
