Paul Helmke went on Fox News yesterday to expound on a proposal to relax the CCW restrictions in some state re: airports. If you are driving to meet a passenger or drop one off you have to leave you gun HOME. Not even in the trunk. Thus you are very likely unarmed for a late night drive to and from the airport.

NOBODY is saying to let people wander around secured areas like the board gate or passenger waiting area armed. Helmke spouted some line about "nobody with any sense wanting dangerous people running around airports with concealed guns". To add weight to this nonsense he threw out a line about "160 people killed by CCW holders".

First he didn't say over what time period. Second he said "killed" not "murdered". This sounds like weasel language. IF the number is legit maybe somebody here can tell me. What I REALLY want to know is if these were legal self-defense cases. Antis LOVE to conflate defense and law enforcement intervention with murders. :butthead:

What I really need to find out is the origin of this "stat" about 160 legal CCW owners committing murder. Sounds like the Wintemute "study" about guns in the home and "43 times more likely to harm a family member". Once the anti-gun drones and trolls latch onto a scary stat they cling to it like the True Cross.

I've seen the breakdown before. It's about what you'd expect from lying sacks of doo. I wish I could remember where I saw it. I'd give you a link.

I still have to keep digging. That "160" quote is going to metastasize until it becomes a part of the culture like the Wintermute Study.

And it's so stupid even if it were true. Compare that minuscule 160 against the number of people killed by crooks with a gun or whatever implement (or fists or cars), or the number of people who drown accidentally in their own tubs or pools.

The rational reaction to the 160 number, even if it were true, would be "Heck, is that all? Shoot, we can obviously go back to selling these things in the Penney's catalog, like we used to!"

I sent a Talkback. He explained that, while the stat needs further review, it DOES seem thoroughly "cooked". Helmke does NOT separate lawful instances of self-defense and cases where NO charges were even filed.

Each year about ONE person with CCW is charged with homicide. These cases RARELY involve a gun. Mostly they are vehicular homicides or cases of manslaughter involving negligence. As a paralegal I can tell you that for all practical purposes all cases where some person caused another's death are technically "homicides" there are MANY FORMS of homicide.

Helmke the Bloviator wants Americans to think pre-meditated first-degree murder with licensed guns is common. He can't win if he tells the truth. Just like counting gang bangers up to age 24 as "children" inflates the child murder rates. The real number is less than those that fall into 5 gallon buckets and DROWN each year, about 350. I KNEW I smelled a rat here.
