View Full Version : Student shoots in Va. Classroom

A student opened fire with a rifle in a Northern Virginia Community College classroom. The shooter did not hit anyone and surrendered peacefully in a hallway. Obviously, this person did not wish to die. Although he did not hit anyone, he could have and a fired round could have penetrated a wall and hit someone in another room. A fact is that this "gun free" zone did not prevent this incident from happening. I posted this in the carry forum for this reason. It is obvious this student did not want to die. It is also obvious that the school being designated a "gun free" zone did not prevent this from happening. Therefore, one must consider that if there was a possibility of encountering an armed teacher or other student, would that have deterred this student from his actions? I think the obvious answer is yes! Gun free zones do not prevent people from commiting crimes nor do they protect people in those locations.

Another case of "gun free zones" at their finest... Luck is the only reason this story isn't very sad.
Moving discussion to "other arms usage" area.

Reports I saw indicated that the rifle jammed after two rounds. God only knows what might have happened if not for the malfunction.
What bothers me is articles praising the teacher (who dove under her desk) for "saving" everyone in the classroom by screaming something brilliantly insightful like," "Run, he's got a gun!" There must have been some males in the class, and the shooter's attention was on the teacher. Why the blue bloody blazes didn't somebody JUMP HIM? It was a bolt action rifle, for heaven's sake. It's not like he could have whipped around and taken out the entire class before reloading.

This is sadly an area of 2a that is eroding at a time where gains are being made elsewhere... More schools are not following state law and creating policy that violates state law. A case in Colorado is one of the latest...
We have now taken to praising a coward. Praise him after he takes a desk and knocks the guy out that is trying to murder people...
Just another example to illustrate the need for vigilance in protecting ones right to protect themselves against the crazies in this world.

In fairness to the teacher, he was a she, and a 50-something Russian woman at that. I would not expect her to tackle the shooter and I think her diving for "concealment" (since a hunting rifle would obviously have shot right through the desk) was a natural and predictable reaction. My complaints are with (1) the media, for lavishing praise on the teacher for "saving" the students (of course, they quoted a female student who said just that) when she actually did nothing; and (2) the male students in the class, not one of whom had the guts of Todd Beemer to say "Let's roll!" and take the guy out while he was working the bolt on the rifle.
