A new identification technology was the subject of a hearing in the state capitol yesterday. The technology is microstamping which allows tracing of a semiautomatic handgun from the spent shell casings. One former Milwaukee police officer claims that not that or any other law that could be passed will have any impack on criminals. Another former Milwaukee police officer claims that it would enable tracing a handgun used in certain crimes to the original purchaser. Funny, I believe that information is already available to law enforcement. Hey, I have an idea. Lets develop firearms that will not fire until they are plugged into a cell phone and a program in the firearm automatically calls police and warns them that the firearm is about to be fired and gives the location by GPS and scans the fingerprints of the person holding the firearm and transmits them to the police. How about that?

Still doesn"t tell you who fired the gun. And what about "wheel" guns?

The mechanism for not only defeating this but absolutely confounding it by bad guys is so ridiculously simple it almost hurts. Go to a shooting range -- any range -- and scarf up a handful or three of left-over handgun casings. Just to make it really fun for the CSI types, be sure you're wearing latex exam gloves when you pick them up, and be sure to get at least three different calibers.

Then, when you pull off your hit, use a revolver, but toss a handful of the surplus empties on the ground around where you were standing.

AB, Good point. I think the entire idea is to create a gun registry and increase the cost of gun ownership. Just think of the cost of replacing a firing pin with micro-stamping.
