Gun rights advocates object to gun registration as offensive to the Second Amendment and a slippery slope toward gun confiscation, as happened in New York City and California in the late 20th century. But a Utah appeals court ruling on September 24, 2009 (quashing a hyper-zealous criminal prosecution of Kidus Yohannes, a legally present immigrant alien who made a mistake on a gun purchase form when buying two long guns) highlights the danger of decentralized gun registration through gun dealer transfer records.

The Utah man's crime? The alien registration number that Mr. Yohannes "provided on the form was an application number given to Yohannes by immigration officials when he applied to change his status from asylum to lawful permanent resident" and not his previously assigned actual alien registration number.
