VRE board members changed the transit agency's policy to match Virginia code which allows people without a criminal record to carry firearms in plain view and those with a permit to carry concealed. A VRE spokesman noted, however, that guns remain banned once the trains crossed the Potomac River and enter the Distric of Columbia. The article did not mention if the change takes place immediately or not. Anyone taking advantage of this change in policy should probably be a little cautious and be sure the change is in effect.

I believe that their is a similar bill that was introduced for AMTRAK.. When I get a minute I will post a link. Only real problem is you cant carry a firearm in almost their entire North East route's States...

No, the AMTRAK bill would only allowed firearms in checked luggage and they have to be in a locked container and you have to declare them. So essentially it would bring it up to par with current air travel regs. In the VRE rule change, you can actually carry on your person on the train.

You are correct in that. Its only allows in checked luggage, but it is an improvement from banned...

With the VRE change in policy you just have to remember that all firearms are banned, period, once the train enters the District of Columbia. The AMTRAK change, if it happens, would not allow carry on the train. Here is a link on the AMTRAK change, there are probably other links.

Many, maybe most, VRE riders are going into the District so not many people are actually going to be carrying on the train. Living in this area all of my life, it is striking how very different VA is from MD and even more so from DC...it makes it tricky here, you have to plan your actions based on where you are headed.

We have to watch the Chicago case closely. Gura is trying to do what I've wanted for a long time-apply the 14th Amendment to the 2nd Amendment and FORCE the states to recognize the individual right that it IS. The whole purpose of the 14th Amendment was to bind the States to the Bill of Rights. Originally written to keep the South from abusing the rights of the newly freed slaves, it has been applied broadly ever since it was ratified.
