Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said on Tuesday he would switch to the Democratic party, presenting Democrats with a possible 60th vote and the power to break Senate filibusters as they try to advance the Obama administration’s new agenda.

Wow. At least his voting record on 2nd Amendment issues is not in lock step with his new party affiliation. This is not good news. Keep an eye out to see if his stance on gun legislation changes as easily as he has switched parties.

This is disgraceful.... He took all the money, now he flips when he realized he was going to loose to Toomey.

He is a disgrace, he was on record opposing the bailout then they earmarked money for cancer research and he flipped on his vote. :nono:

That is terrible news! As President of a Republican Club, I attended many functions with Arlen over the years. Although I did not always agree with him, I had a deep respect for him. Now he is in a class with Benedict Arnold!......

guess we can't call Arlan a RINO any more. He is a dhimmicrat indeed, as well as in deed.

This bit of self aggrandizement and totally self centered showmanship, will be very helpful to the anti gun folks in getting their agenda passed.

At least Benedict Arnold did it over a women, and not political aggrandizement. (OK lets not go there).
I wonder how much Georgie Soros paid for this move.

Unfortunately one will never know.

I do believe this was simply a political move to save his seat in DC..... He knew that he would not get out of the primary....

"To become" ? Hasn't he really been more of a Democrat than Republican for a very long time anyway?

I'm also not surprised that a long-time politician would do just about anything to hold on to his/her elected position - including the expedient of switching parties.

On your first point, I would say that Arlen was a very moderate Republican maverick who the Brady Bunch gave a 10% rating to on gun control. Hopefully he will maintain that record on gun control. However, I am not betting any money on that notion!

On your second point, The current state of affairs is horrible. IMHO many elected officials main and in many cases 'only' concern, is attaining and remaining in power. Scruples is a trait that appears to be passe in todays political climate. Arlen Spector proves the point that we are both making!

One of the talk shows mentioned that a politicians first job is to make certain they get re-elected.
He's just following his instincts.
